Clear Aligners Q&A

What are clear aligners?

Invisalign® clear aligners available at Bothell Family Dentistry consist of comfortable plastic molds that slowly move your teeth into a desired position. You wear the clear trays over the surface of your teeth, unlike with traditional braces, but the results are just as impressive.

What are the benefits of clear aligners?

The advantages of choosing Invisalign clear aligners at Bothell Family Dentistry include:

  • Aligned bite
  • Straight teeth
  • Beautiful smile
  • Easier teeth cleaning
  • Reduced risk of oral health problems
  • Diminished pain
  • No irritation
  • Utmost comfort
  • Self-confidence

Clear aligners aren’t noticeable, so most people won’t realize you’re wearing them. You can remove them to eat, brush your teeth, and floss.

Are clear aligners right for me?

To determine if you’re a candidate for clear aligners, Dr. Ament discusses your goals and oral health history with you. She examines your mouth, gums, and teeth and takes dental X-rays if necessary. She also lets you know what to expect during treatment.

To create custom-fitted clear aligners, Dr. Ament uses digital technology to scan your mouth. That allows a dental lab to create a personalized series of aligners that fit your mouth perfectly.

What should I expect when wearing clear aligners?

When the clear aligners are ready, expect to wear them 20-22 hours a day or as instructed by Dr. Ament. Only take the aligners out to eat, drink, and clean your teeth.

You can keep the aligners clean with a specialized Invisalign cleaning system or a toothbrush and toothpaste. Don’t rinse clear aligners in hot water.

After a week or two, or as directed, switch to the next set of aligners in your treatment series. Most clear aligner treatments last about 6-18 months, but every patient has different needs.

What happens after treatment with clear aligners?

After you complete clear aligner treatment, follow all instructions to keep your teeth in their new alignment. You should wear a retainer, at least for part of the day or at night, to ensure a long-lasting outcome.

Take good care of your beautiful new smile by brushing after meals, flossing daily, and seeing your dentist at least every six months.
